Our ultimate goal at The Reading Company (TRC) is to get your child into college. This doesn’t mean that we talk with 4 year-old children about the SAT and college essays! We want to form a relationship with our students that will last throughout their entire academic journeys. We will work together with students and parents from K-12 all the way through the college application process. We use programs developed by Dr. Kerwin and our Administrative Team that include personal tutoring and mentoring, speed reading, test preparation, and community participation to ensure that your child goes to a school that matches them.
These programs are designed to be supplemental to a child’s in-school academic work. We only want to be involved with students where there is a direct need for our services. For example, we may help a student switch schools in 4th grade and then see them again once they are in high school and ready for college coaching. We’re here for students and their families when they need supplemental support!
The Administrative Team
The Reading Company’s Administrative Team is comprised of members with various backgrounds in education. Collectively, they create individualized curriculum for each student at TRC. Whenever your child is working with a tutor in our classroom, one of these administrators is also present.
Brad Kerwin, EdD, is an educator and consultant who has worked at Punahou School and over fifty other schools, colleges, and businesses in Hawaii over the past 40 years. After arriving here in the islands from UCLA in 1972, he began developing and directing educational programs starting in 1975, working in areas such as School Accreditation, Staff Development, Test Preparation, General Tutoring, Speed Reading, Parent Workshops, and more. An award winning student and instructor at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and an administrator, teacher, and consultant at Punahou School for over twenty years, Dr. Kerwin and his staff at The Reading Company, Inc. bring their considerable talent and background to schools, institutions, families, and businesses as teachers, tutors, program developers, and consultants, for students from Kindergarten through Medical School.
Adrian Kerwin is the President and Director of The Reading Company. He has over 13 years of experience working as a tutor, teacher, special education assistant, and educator. The college coaching and executive coaching curriculum at The Reading Company was created by Adrian. He has taught English as a second language in Japan, worked extensively in the Clarence T.C. Ching PUEO Program at Punahou School, and participates in multiple community and non-profit organizations. Adrian believes in equal access of opportunity and education for all children and will continue to pursue all avenues of guiding families to finding and utilizing support for their children.
Meg Akim is the Director of Communications & Instruction at The Reading Company, Inc. She graduated from Duke University with a degree in Neuroscience and a concentration on Child Development, Learning and Memory. Meg’s personal motto is “empowering minds to learn; instilling confidence to achieve.” She has a diverse pool of talents that she is always adding to: modeling, mentorship, life skills workshops for female youth, and adding her crafts to her Etsy page on the weekends! Completing a PhD in Psychoneuroendocrinology (PNEI) is on Meg’s future radar.
Cari has been assisting Dr. K and The Reading Company, Inc. Administration since January 2016. Since completing her BAs in Psychology and German Language and Literature at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she has come to focus exclusively on aiding in The Reading Company’s mission. Though she does not have prior experience with academic coaching, she loves being around the positivity and joy that our students bring to the office and has been learning from the great examples that our coaches have been setting. Cari hopes to pursue MAs in Public Health and German, and is passionate about improving Hawaii’s resources for comprehensive family planning.
Amy joined The Reading Company in August of 2017 as a student support coach and moved into being a member of the administrative team in October. She has experienced working with children of diverse socio-economic backgrounds in a variety of capacities, including tutoring students, implementing science curriculum in a summer school program, and assisting in a Montessori classroom. Currently, Amy is working more “behind the scenes” as Assistant Director of Human Resources and takes care of all scheduling at TRC. While earning her Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Hawaiian Studies from Chaminade University, she also studied Nursing and developed a passion for geriatrics and natural health. In the future, Amy hopes to further explore holistic approaches in geriatric care.
Nolan first started working with The Reading Company as a tutor in December of 2015 and joined the administrative team as a Supervisor and Technology Coordinator in September of 2017. He works hand in hand with both students and tutors to establish and meet academic goals for the student. Outside of his work at TRC, Nolan has coached a youth baseball team for over three years, which has helped him develop his skills for working with children. With an affinity for computers and technology he is currently pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science. In his free time he enjoys playing games ranging from Dungeons & Dragons to video games and is the ‘Game Master’ of TRC.
